Name numerology — how to calculate the numbers of your full name

Name numerology turns letters into numbers and adds them up to a single digit from 1 to 9. Three numbers come from your full name: the name number (all letters), the soul number (vowels — what you truly desire) and the personality number (consonants — how others see you).

The letter chart (Pythagorean system)

The most widely used system is the Pythagorean one: the letters of the alphabet are numbered in order from 1 to 9, then the count starts again. Accented letters count as their base letter.

  • 1 — A, J, S
  • 2 — B, K, T
  • 3 — C, L, U
  • 4 — D, M, V
  • 5 — E, N, W
  • 6 — F, O, X
  • 7 — G, P, Y
  • 8 — H, Q, Z
  • 9 — I, R

Example: John Smith

Name number — all letters: J(1) O(6) H(8) N(5) = 20; S(1) M(4) I(9) T(2) H(8) = 24. Together 44, and 4 + 4 = 8.

Soul number — the vowels O and I: 6 + 9 = 15, and 1 + 5 = 6.

Personality number — the consonants J, H, N, S, M, T, H: 1 + 8 + 5 + 1 + 4 + 2 + 8 = 29, then 2 + 9 = 11 and 1 + 1 = 2.

The vowels are A, E, I, O, U and Y. The sum is always reduced by adding its digits until a single digit remains.

Every number is a planet

In Vedic numerology every digit has its planet — the same ones we read in the birth chart and on the hand:

  • 1 — the Sun: independence, leadership
  • 2 — the Moon: sensitivity, cooperation
  • 3 — Jupiter: wisdom, teaching, optimism
  • 4 — Rahu: unconventionality, change, ambition
  • 5 — Mercury: communication, movement, trade
  • 6 — Venus: love, beauty, harmony
  • 7 — Ketu: spirituality, intuition, inquiry
  • 8 — Saturn: perseverance, responsibility, work
  • 9 — Mars: courage, energy, action

The name is the only thing you can change

We do not choose the time and place of our birth, nor our hands. The name — partly, we do: the short form we use, a married name, a pen name, a company name. That is why name numerology is practical: it shows which planet we strengthen with the name we are called by.

In VesicaKarma the numerology of the full name is the third layer of the Wheel of Karma: it does not vote in the comparison of sky and hand, but shows what the name further strengthens among the things both systems have confirmed.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include my middle name?

Classically, you calculate the full name from your birth certificate. It is also worth calculating the version you use every day — it shows the energy you are strengthening now.

Is Y a vowel?

In this system, yes — Y is counted with A, E, I, O, U for the soul number.

What about accented letters?

They count as their base letters: é = e, ñ = n, ü = u, ç = c and so on.
