Mounts of the palm — the planets in palmistry and their meaning
The mounts are the raised pads of the palm under the fingers, at the base of the thumb and along the edge of the hand. Each bears the name of a planet and describes its strength in a person: a full, springy mount is a strong planet, a flat one — less pronounced, and an overdeveloped one — a planet there is "too much" of.
The mounts under the fingers
- Jupiter — under the index finger: ambition, leadership, faith, a sense of meaning.
- Saturn — under the middle finger: responsibility, seriousness, patience, work.
- The Sun — under the ring finger: creativity, joy, the need for recognition.
- Mercury — under the little finger: communication, trade, learning, dexterity.
Venus, the Moon and the two Mars
- Venus — at the base of the thumb, encircled by the life line: love, sensuality, vitality, warmth.
- The Moon — on the edge of the palm, opposite Venus: imagination, intuition, emotions, travel.
- Lower Mars — by the thumb, above Venus: courage, readiness to act.
- Upper Mars — on the edge of the palm, under Mercury: perseverance, resilience, the ability to endure.
Rahu and Ketu — mounts from Indian palmistry
Indian palmistry adds two places for the lunar nodes: Rahu in the centre of the palm (the Western plain of Mars) — desires, ambitions, what we seek in this life; and Ketu just above the wrist — old skills, intuition, letting go. With them the hand holds all nine planets of Vedic astrology.
How to judge a mount
A mount is judged against the whole hand, not in isolation: by touch (springy or soft), by height and by whether its centre lies exactly under the finger or is shifted towards a neighbouring mount. A shift means the qualities of both planets mix.
Signs on the mounts count too: a star, a triangle, a square, a cross or a vertical line. A vertical line on the mount of the Sun, for example, is a short Sun line — a sign of creative strength.
Mounts and the birth chart
This is the same set of planets as in the Vedic birth chart. In VesicaKarma each mount is compared with the strength of the same planet in the sky at the moment of birth. A planet strong in both places is the most reliable talent.
Frequently asked questions
Which mount stands for love?
The mount of Venus at the base of the thumb — love, sensuality and warmth. The heart line also speaks of the way you love.
What does a flat mount mean?
That the qualities of that planet are less pronounced and worth developing consciously. A flat mount is not a bad sign — it is a place to work on.
How many mounts are there on the palm?
Western palmistry has eight: Jupiter, Saturn, the Sun, Mercury, Venus, the Moon and two Mars. Indian palmistry adds the places of Rahu and Ketu.
