The life line on the palm — meaning, length and forks

The life line is the arc that curves around the base of the thumb (the mount of Venus). Contrary to popular belief, it does not tell how long you will live. It describes vital energy, resilience, a sense of rootedness and major changes in life. A short life line does not mean a short life.

Where the life line is

It starts at the edge of the palm between the thumb and the index finger and curves down towards the wrist, encircling the mount of Venus. In the drawing it is marked with a bold line.

A wide or a tight curve

A wide curve, reaching far into the palm, is associated with plenty of energy, warmth and a desire to act. A tight curve, running close to the thumb, describes someone who conserves strength, needs more rest and feels good at a calmer pace.

Length and depth

A deep, clear line means steady, even energy. A thin or faint line means variable energy, dependent on mood and surroundings. Length speaks more of how strongly life is lived "in the body" — movement, health, everyday life — than of the number of years.

The start of the life line

When the life line starts together with the head line (the two are joined at the beginning), tradition reads this as caution and a strong bond with the family home — decisions ripen more slowly. When there is a gap between them, it speaks of independence and courage in making your own decisions from a young age.

Breaks, islands, forks

  • A break — a clear change of life direction: a move, a new stage, a change of lifestyle. If the ends overlap, the change goes smoothly.
  • An island (an oval "eye") — a period of weakened or scattered strength.
  • A fork at the end — one branch stays by the thumb, the other runs towards the mount of the Moon: a sign of longing for travel or for life far from one's birthplace.
  • A sister line (the line of Mars) running parallel on the inner side — extra support and resilience.

The life line and Venus

The life line encircles the mount of Venus — the planet of the body, the senses and bonds. That is why they are read together: a full, springy mount with a clear life line means vitality and joy in everyday life. In VesicaKarma the Venus of the hand is compared with Venus in the birth chart.

Frequently asked questions

Does a short life line mean a short life?

No. This is one of the most common myths of palmistry. The length of the life line describes energy and how everyday life is lived, not the length of life.

What does a broken life line mean?

Most often a clear change of direction: a new stage, a move, a change of lifestyle. If the ends of the line overlap, the change is gentle.

What does a double life line mean?

A second, parallel line on the inner side (the line of Mars, or sister line) is regarded as a sign of extra resilience and support in difficult times.
