The head line on the palm — your way of thinking, learning and deciding

The head line runs across the middle of the palm, from under the index finger towards its edge. It does not measure intelligence but your way of thinking: whether you think in facts or in images, quickly or in depth, and how you make decisions.

Straight or sloping

A straight head line, running horizontally, belongs to a practical and logical mind: numbers, plans, concrete facts. A line sloping towards the mount of the Moon (the lower edge of the palm) means imagination, thinking in images, artistic sensitivity. The more it slopes, the more intuition and fantasy there is in the thinking.

The length of the head line

A long head line is a mind that likes to analyse things from every side. A short one — quick, goal-focused thinking: less deliberation, more decisions. Neither long nor short is "better".

The writer's fork

When the head line splits at the end into two branches, tradition calls it the writer's fork. One branch runs straight (logic), the other slopes (imagination) — the gift of seeing things from two sides at once, often found in people who write, teach and negotiate.

The start of the head line

A head line joined to the life line at the start means prudence and thinking closely tied to family and upbringing. A line starting separately, higher up, on the mount of Jupiter — self-confidence and early independence of thought.

Signs on the head line

  • An island — a period of exhaustion or scattered attention.
  • A chain — jumping thoughts, difficulty focusing on one thing.
  • A break — a clear change of views or way of thinking.
  • A square around a break — protection, coming out of a difficult period with help.

The head line and Mercury

In palmistry, as in astrology, thinking and speech belong to Mercury. A clear head line with a well-developed mount and finger of Mercury is a mind that can pass its thoughts on to others. In VesicaKarma the Mercury of the hand is compared with Mercury in the birth chart.

Frequently asked questions

What does a sloping head line mean?

Thinking in images and imagination — artistic sensitivity, intuition, ease of creating. The more the line slopes towards the mount of the Moon, the more fantasy in the thinking.

Does a short head line mean low intelligence?

No. A short head line means quick, goal-focused thinking, without long deliberation over every possibility.

What is the simian line?

A single line across the palm formed by the head line and heart line merging. It describes enormous concentration: when such a person commits to something, they do it wholeheartedly — with thought and feeling at once.
